"...it not only gave me a greater appreciation of perfumers but demystified perfumery in general. Thank you for making an educational event an interesting and enlightening experience."

"Sharing the Perfumery Course amongst professional chemists, Perfume critique, Perfume magazine writer and Perfumers, aromatherapist and massage therapists, entrepreneurs, people of experience and wisdom has truly been a gift. When you are taking your first steps into this field, as I am, following your intuition to manifest a dream with scents and the vibrations they trigger in us, Steven [Dowthwaite], Philip [Goutell] and Jing [Wilai Saetang] not only bring a very human down to earth face to a rather protected, secretive world, that of the Perfume Industry but I have to say, I was given the chance to learn foundation blocks of knowledge, a methodology to creating fragrances that was full of humility and clarity and doted of English flair and humor. Thank you for this valuable learning experience again!" — Katia Hosch

"Thanks again for the wonderful class and good luck spreading the gospel of enlightened smelling. I liked the use of guest speakers sharing their expertise in areas that were outside of Steve's."

"...thank you for the wonderful experience during the course. It was great beyond my expectations. Having worked as a chemist in support of various aspects of perfumery I expected that most of the course would either be materials that I was already familiar with or else would have covered areas that would not have been relevant to me. However, I found all of the material interesting and useful. Moreover, I was impressed by Steve's ability to distill so many aspects of perfumery into a cohesive and understandable course. This is remarkable considering the broad background of the participants. I applaud him for the goal of creating a global community of perfumers, possibly transforming the future of perfumery."

"Dear Phil, I'm more than delighted to be a part of this first [U.S.A.] workshop and personally the great job done by Steve, and you, as well as Jing behind the scean. I have been reviewing all the material provided, especially on the CD Rom, with so much information on many detailed formulas to start with. It will take me a while to digest so much info. So keep me informed for next year!" — Miguel Angel Ibarra Corrales, Mexico, DF

The 2008, 5-Day, PerfumersWorld "Art and Technology of Perfumery" workshop in New York City brought together thirty people of diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Several participants had flown in from the West Coast and one from Western Canada. Others came from France, Mexico, Chile, and Eastern Canada. And, of course, the New York City area was well represented.

In spite of a diversity in languages (English, French, Spanish, Thai) and backgrounds — which ranged from absolute beginners to professional perfumers to research chemists with major consumer goods and fragrance companies — the gathering was marked by a spirit of camaraderie and an eagerness to begin again each morning.

Among the exercises the class undertook were "matching" a classic fragrance (Anais Anais by Cacharel) for which the formula was unknown to them. Several of the workgroups created quite credible matches. (With Sean Jean's Unforgivable, the group had less success!)

In an exercise on perfume creation, the workgroups used "mind maps" (a concept developed by Tony Buzan) to create a fragrance around a theme. Also, in a talk on "formulating by function," Dowthwaite defined both the starting and stoppingpoints — the clearly discernable point at which a new fragrance is "done" — in perfume creation. (If only clients would listen!)

Another exercise involved creating aromatherapy blends, which each workgroup being assigned a different theme. This came after an intense session on the roots of aromatherapy and the difficulties (and ambiguities) a perfumer is confronted with when attempting to work with "all natural" aroma materials. (Dowthwaite pointed out that nothing is more natural than crude oil — the source material for most synthetic aroma chemicals!)

The final two days of the workshop made use of a just released version of PerfumersWorld's "The Perfumers Workbook", and CD's of this perfume creation software were distributed to the class.
