What follows is a general outline of what participants in our 2009 U.S. Workshop can expect. It is by no means an exact syllabus. Perfumer, educator, corporate trainer, Steve Dowthwaite has an excellent sense of the needs and requirements of individual classes and each workshop is adopted "on the fly" to be most meaningful to the individual participants of each particular workshop. If you are considering enrolling in this workshop and have questions as to what emphasis will be given to a particular topic, or if you have a particular need which you would like covered in the 2009 Workshop, please contact us with your question and we will respond. For more of an introduction to PerfumersWorld workshops, visit PerfumersWorld.com and watch this video. Workshop PrerequisitesNone! That's right. You can come to this course without any knowledge of perfumery. You can come to this workshop without any background in chemistry. If you have an interest in perfumery and want to learn how a perfume is composed and why it is composed in a certain way, this workshop will be useful to you. However... this 5-Day Perfumery Workshop is an intense learning experience. No homework but many hours of theory and practical work. No one sleeps in a PerfumersWorld workshop! Also note that this workshop involves the use continuous use of perfumery raw materials, both natural and synthetic. We try to keep the workspace well ventilated and participants will normally step out for a few minutes for fresh air from time to time, but if you are phobic to perfumery materials, this workshop is NOT for you! We have already assembled a library of over 700 different perfumery raw materials that will be present for the workshop. These include essential oils, perfume bases, resinoids, synthetic substitutes for animal source odorants (we do not use any animal-derived aroma materials in this workshop or in our own practices), and other perfumery raw materials. Your are free to explore any or all of them. If last year's group is any indication, you may find yourself working alongside someone who has spent a lifetime in perfume industry as a salesman, chemist, or evaluator. Seated next to you on the other side may be a person with great enthusiasm and interest in perfume but absolutely no professional experience. By working together and sharing with these people of diverse backgrounds, you will find your own Workshop experience greatly heightened. Daily Schedule8:30 - 9:15 – Breakfast* 9:30 - 12:00 – Theory 12:30 - 1:15 – Lunch* 1:30 - 3:00 – Workshop I 3:00 - 3:30 – Coffee Break 3:30 - 5:30 – Workshop II 6:00 - 6:45 – Supper* * Meals and lodging are included in the Workshop registration fee. Meals are served cafeteria style and our group will be assigned our own tables. Topics Generally Covered
ProceduresYou cannot progress in perfumery without knowing some underlying theory and thus theory is important in this Workshop. Yet as taught in this Workshop, theory is quickly linked to practical exercises where you make a very direct application of what you have just been taught. If last year's Workshop was typical, morning lectures on fragrance creation theory were generously intersperced with hands on student exercises with aroma materials. The group is broken into workgroups of from 6 to 8 persons (depending on table size) and raw materials are shared by the group. Additional materials are available. About 700 different perfumery materials will be available for participants in the group to explore and use. [Printer Friendly] |
