Now more than ever there is a need for us to meet each other, face to face, to work and share together, and refresh our understandings of the current quirks in the market for fragrance products, and how we can best address them.
In addition to our rigorous daily perfumery work with Steve Dowthwaite, our meals (group seating) and quiet evenings at Warwick will give us an unsurpassed opportunity for making new contacts, sharing ideas and experiences, and helping each other develop new opportunities.
Creating and marketing perfume and fragrance products can be a lonely business in which it is difficult to get professional information and advice. The larger companies do not encourage employees to fraternize with those outside the company. (Both Steve Dowthwaite and I can relate personal experiences here!)
While perfumers and marketers do give occasional interviews, and occasionally a writer is allowed "inside" a fragrance creation house, the flow of information to the public is always carefully scripted — "for security purposes" — secrets must be kept!
That is why Steve Dowthwaite's workshops are so refreshing. Here is a person who was trained in perfumery within the industry, who has had encounters with the largest fragrance creation houses, who left his native England and went off to found his own fragrance creation house in Asia, and is now on a mission to share what he knows.
Contrary to the conventional wisdom that it takes seven years to become a a perfumer, Steve Dowthwaite believes it can take about three minutes -- those three minutes in which you make up your mind that you will become a perfumer.
The belief that knowledge of perfumery should be shared is the foundation of our 5-Day Workshop. Steve Dowthwaite's self-professed goal is to make creative perfumery "available to the millions," to make it as accessible as art or music, to give all who love aromas and want to create their own the knowledge that will allow them to do it successfully and professionally. Far from protecting the industry from the competition of "amateurs," Steven V. Dowthwaite wants to help you create excellent perfumes and fragrance products of your own! Products that can be sold.
This year, as our Workshop Group will be dining together as a group and sharing the same lodgings, we will have additional "quality time" to get to know each other and share our concerns and experiences. Steve Dowthwaite, his daughter (age 12), an associate, and myself will all be staying at the Conference Center with you. This is a perfect setting for our own "G20" summit!

If you have purchased the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course you are already familiar with the The Perfumers Workbook. It has been called "the most advanced creative perfumery tool available outside a major fragrance house" and it can be used to suggest ways to fine tune your existing formula — tweaking your formula with aroma materials you had not considered and balancing the materials you have selected to give you your desired result — or it can be used to create entire perfume formulas from the fragrance descriptions you supply.
Version 9.025 of The Perfumers Workbook will be distributed as course material to all members of the 2009 5-Day Workshop Group but you can download it now! Be patient! The file is 17.5 megabytes.
Experimenting with The Perfumers Workbook is a great way to prepare yourself (and your questions) for the 2009 5-Day Perfumery Workshop at Warwick, NY. It will give you a taste of what you can expect to encounter face-to-face and, yes, at the Workshop Steve Dowthwaite will cover the use of The Perfumers Workbook in depth. Register for the Workshop now. And don't forget to bring you laptop!
Registering for the Workshop?
Just as soon as we receive your paid Workshop Registration Fee we'll send you a registration key for your new copy of The Perfumer's Workbook.
You can use The Perfumer's Workbook without registering it. There is no time limit to how long you can use it. But a limit has been placed on your unregistered copy — you will not be able to add new aroma materials to the raw materials database (which, in time, you will want to do) and you will not be able to edit the descriptions of raw materials, which, in time, you will also want to be able to do, if you "smell" certain materials a bit differently than we do.

Certain fundamentals of perfumery are an essential part of the workshop. But, although there is a "course outline," flexibility is build in and our intention is to meet the specific needs of those who are participating. The course outline is, therefore, a general picture of what you can expect but the reality will probably be more interesting and relevant that your expectations. Location
The Warwick Center, a 465 acre hilltop estate, is located 50 miles northwest of New York City at 62 Warwick Center Road, Warwick, NY 10990.
The Warwick Center welcomes all. The only restrictions are those imposed by the needs for safety (the buildings a4re old and all rooms, including bedrooms, are "no smoking" areas) and by the need to maintain a tranquil atmosphere for other groups.
To whet your appetite for this beautiful part of New York State, we've put a mini tourist brochure on this website. To view it, click here.
We have posted some travel directions for you here.
Transportation
The Warwick Center can be reached by private car or by Bus to the Village of Warwick from New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal by a NJ Transit express bus. If you are arriving by bus, notify us in advance and we will arrange to have you picked up at the bus stop for the short ride to the Conference Center.

Certificates
PerfumersWorld issues numbered Certificates of Participation to those who successfully complete the workshop. If you work in a fragrance-related industry, check with your Human Resourse Department as your employer may agree to pay for your enrollment and give you job credit for your participation. Many fragrance-related companies will do this.
PerfumersWorld maintains a permanent record of certificates that have been issued so that your employer or future employer can verify your successful completion of a PerfumersWorld workshop.
