5-Day Perfumery Course In New York City

Learn how perfume is made and create a special perfume of your own

Maybrook, New York, March 6, 2008 — Have you ever wondered how perfume is created or wished you could create a perfume of your own? This coming May 5th through May 9th, fifty lucky people will have a rare opportunity to tour the secretive world of fragrance creation guided by iconoclastic British perfumer, Stephen V. Dowthwaite. Participants in Dowthwaite's 5-day, "Art and Technology of Perfumery" immersion course will observe the creation of a new perfume, be introduced to the raw materials of perfumery, both natural and synthetic, and be given the opportunity to use some of these materials to create a perfume of their own.

Trained at Picot Laboratories in England, Dowthwaite can claim authorship to over 300 fragrances and flavors currently on the market. Based in Bangkok since 1989, Dowthwaite helped launch Thailand's first perfume compounding facility and currently consults for all three of Thailand's major fragrance houses. He is also a consultant to Thailand's National Science and Technical Development Agency and has been teaching perfumery at the university level and to private students since the early 1990's.

Dowthwaite's personal mission is to expose people outside the industry to the methods and materials of professional perfumery. It is motivated by his belief that perfumery -- like art and music -- is a creative form that can and should be enjoyed by a far wider range of men and women than the handful selected by the perfume industry for salaried positions. If results are any proof, Dowthwaite's hypothesis is correct and a number of his students have gone on to create quite credible fragrances of their own.

Author of "The ABC's of Perfumery" training method and "The Perfumers Workbook," a computer program that guides advanced amateurs through the perfumery creation process, Dowthwaite, through his website, PerfumersWorld.com, offers beginners what may be the only source, worldwide, of home study training in commercial perfumery and claims to having trained more students worldwide in perfumery than any other teacher using any other method.

In Dowthwaite's 5-day course, students will learn by listening, watching and then doing. Topics covered will include "the art of smelling," "recognizing, remembering and recreating odors," "an introduction to the raw materials of perfumery, both natural and synthetic," and "putting it together to make your own special fragrance." Mornings will involve lectures and demonstrations, afternoon sessions will involve hands on work with aroma materials leading to the creation of the student's own personal perfume. Graduates of the 5-day session can continue their studies with advanced training offered by PerfumersWorld.com online.

On May 7th, the group will receive a short presentation on custom designed perfume bottles by Hugues Thibaud of O.Berk Company, Union, New Jersey. Born into the perfume industry in Grasse, France, Thibaud will also share personal experiences from a lifetime in the French perfume industry.

Advance registration is required. The bonus gift of an aromatherapy and natural perfumery training kit is is offered to students who register and make full payment by March 31st. The course is sponsored jointly by PerfumersWorld, Ltd. (PerfumersWorld.com) and Lightyears, Inc. (PerfumeProjects.com)
