Foundation Course in Creative Perfumery

Perfumery Workshops

Ten Blocks of Online
Lessons in Perfumery

"The Secret of Perfume Lies In The
Imagination That Springs From Knowledge"

— Sattaporn Kietthanakorn
(from PerfumersWorld Foundation Course, Unit 2)

In addition to raw materials, equipment, and software, the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course provides ten blocks of structured online lessons to facilitate your ...

  • learning by replicating classic perfumes
  • learning to create more effective aromatherapy blends
  • learning to scent soaps, shampoos, creams, and lotions
  • learning to train your nose to smell like an expert
  • learning to select the right materials for your composition
  • learning to identify and delete materials that weaken your composition
  • learning to prepare a finished perfume from your formula
  • learning how to spot when a seller's essential oil isn't "right"
  • learning to improve your formula by identifying and switching to the precise aroma material you need

... and this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Creating perfume requires the use of the imagination. Perfume is a work of art. A successful perfume doesn't just happen. It can only come into being when the perfume maker—artist is steeped in a knowledge of the materials available and the possibilities these materials offer.

When we think about fragrance it can be easier to relate to the name behind the fragrance and the look of the bottle and packaging than to the contents of the bottle, the perfume or cologne itself. Even for many with years of experience working in aromatherapy and essential oils, often there is a lack of understanding of the technical side of perfume creation that leads to frustration when best blending efforts fail to achieve a desired result.

Technical knowledge gives you
the tools you need to create
perfumes that live up to your vision

Random experiments simply don't work. No worthy perfume or cologne has ever been created simply by blending this and that until, Voila! A masterpiece! It simply does not happen that way. While it is easy to knock the creators of popular fragrances — the men and women whose creations fill the perfume shelves of the mass merchandisers — these men and women have been successful at getting their fragrances accepted because however much you may rail against their use of synthetics, the me-too-ness of many of their popular creations, and what might strike you as the lack of richness, depth, and elegance of their perfumes compared to classic fragrances from the past (and the really expensive fragrances of the present!) each of them — the creators of big name fragrances -- understands how to select and use their aroma materials with great skill. Each of them has been trained to take from the many, many the raw materials of perfumery and select precisely those they need to achieve a fragrance that will match the request of the client.

Whatever you may say about their fragrances, some of which you possibly hate, the knowledge that led them to the creation of these fragrances is a knowledge worthy of great respect.

Now what about you?

Unlock your talent and paint
your dreams in beautiful perfume!

Are you ready to unlock the full force of your personal vision and start to assemble, for real, the perfumes that now exist only in your dreams? Would you like to develop or refine your personal ability to translate your fragrance ideas into finished, ready to bottle and sell perfumes? Are you sidelining ideas for new perfumes because you don't know how to get them done efficiently, exactly the way you wanted them, but in a lot less time than you may now be spending to create fragrances that are not quite what you wanted?

If you are creating perfume already, you will find bits and pieces of the ten blocks of online lessons of the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course are likely to pay off in time saved and improved implementation of your vision through methods and technical points new to you. After all, the Foundation Course was written by Stephen V. Dowthwaite, a working perfumer whose own perfumes, aromatherapy blends and spa products are currently being sold in shops in fourteen countries.

If you are totally new to perfumery or still at the beginning of your learning curve, you will find the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course to be absolutely vital.

This is serious training in
perfumery that is extremely
difficult to find

Your goal may be the creation of natural perfume. Your goal may be to improve the effectiveness of your aromatherapy oils. Or, like myself, your interest may be in creating fine fragrances that are finer than what is being offered at the mall.

But regardless of where you are going with your creativity, we all have to begin at a common point — the point of learning the fundamentals of perfumery, right from the beginning — and at this point "natural" and "synthetic" and "green" are not the issues. We must first learn our ABC's — our understanding that in all cases two plus two equals four — and you will do this using synthetic aroma bases. (It's an educational necessity, so get over it!) Armed with knowledge of the basics you can then go on to use any materials you want. And the PerfumersWorld software will even help you make your selections.

A personal testimonial

Both looks and price can be deceiving. A disk, a collection of small bottles, some plastic labware and online "lessons" priced below the cost of Steffen Arctander's Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin or Ernest Guenther's The Essential Oils could be mistaken for a children's toy or science "exploration kit." Nothing could be farther from the truth.

The PerfumersWorld Foundation Course is a no-nonsense gateway to professional level perfume creation for those who have the desire to learn, the discipline to study the lessons and carry out the accompanying skill building exercises, and the ability to see perfumery as a creative art requiring an inquisitive, artistic, creative mind on the part of the perfumer.

When I was struggling to understand how a perfume or cologne was composed on a professional level, how the "famous name" fragrances at the mall were made by their perfumers, I found two levels of resources — those intended for professional perfumers (who were already trained in exactly the knowledge I was seeking!) and what I would call the "fun with mixing essential oils" guidebooks which were little more than advanced versions of Mattel's Barbie Perfume Maker.

My luck changed when I ran across Steve Dowthwaite's PerfumersWorld Foundation Course. I ordered it immediately (it took three weeks to arrive from Thailand) then my serious work in perfumery began. I can still remember the thrill of bottling my first personal creation.

Today I look back on my first great creation and wonder how my nose could have been so blind. But the Foundation Course is open ended. Finishing Lesson Unit # 10 is like graduating from grade school being well prepared to start college. (PerfumersWorld offers advanced training for those who are prepared.)

Recently I spent a month working on a perfume to submit to an international contest, the Patchwood Challenge by PFW Aroma Chemicals in the Netherlands. As I mailed in my entry with a copy of my formula, I was struck by the fact that while only a few of the materials I used in my formula actually came from PerfumersWorld, had it not been for the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course I never would have been sending in that entry. Best of all, win or lose, I knew that my entry was credible in an international competition.

The PerfumersWorld Foundation Course is serious perfumery training. If you are looking for the training you need to expand your perfumery knowledge and realize your creative fragrance vision, I can attest that the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course is an exceptional opportunity to do it.

A personal note

It's been some time since I started with the PerfumersWorld Foundation Course and my first bottles of Steve's "A-Z" Fleuressence® bases and my library of aroma materials has expanded over the years. Still, I find myself going back to the "A-Z" bottles again and again when sketching an outline for a new fragrance. Of course I now buy in larger quantities and use larger bottles than the ones that came with the Course — but the usefulness of those "A-Z" bases remains unchanged.

At Left: I still use Fleuressence® bases from the K-26 kit but I now use them in larger bottles. Here some of these bottles are shown next to an original fragrance I created that is currently being offered online, along with some of my other original creations. Of course my "best" perfume will be the one I am working on now.
